Mitchell Junior Legion held off Sioux Falls East’s seventh-inning comeback to avoid a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday at Drake Field. Sioux Falls won 6-3 in the first game, but Mitchell responded with a 9-7 win in Game 2.
In the second game, Sioux Falls scored two runs in the seventh inning, but stranded a pair of runners to end the game. Seth Muth delivered the final out to earn the save, while Jace Larson struck out seven and allowed seven runs (five earned) over a six-inning start to pick up the win.
Mitchell finished with 14 hits, including five players with two-hit games. Jack Vermeulen went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Dylan Soulek, Riley McGinnis, Ty Neugebauer and Brandon Sparks all had two hits, too.
Jack Nesje finished 4-for-4 with a double for Sioux Falls. Charlie Mickelson took the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) over 2.2 innings.
The first game featured Sioux Falls jumping out to a 6-0 lead before Mitchell scored three runs in the final two frames. Robert Hutchinson held Mitchell to two earned runs on three hits over six innings to notch the win. Sioux Falls had three extra-base hits, as well.

For Mitchell, Neugebauer doubled and Sparks finished 2-for-3. Landon Waddell struck out seven in the loss. He gave up seven runs (three earned) in 6.1 innings.
Mitchell (19-9) travels to Brandon Valley on Friday.
