COLOME-In a battle of nine-man powerhouses, Corsica-Stickney showed off its defense.

The Jaguars held Colome to just 116 yards of total offense and staked itself to a 16-0 lead in the first quarter that the No. 1 team in Class 9A would not relinquish, holding on for a 22-6 win over Colome Friday.

"Our defense was definitely a strong point for our team tonight," said C-S coach Jason Broughton. "Our front is big and bad and they did a nice job tonight."

The Jaguars built the early lead with an 11-play, 69-yard drive off the opening kickoff, with Cordel Menning's eight-yard touchdown run putting C-S up 8-0 early.

Playing through a light rain in the first half, Class 9B No. 2 Colome coughed up the ball on its third offensive play. The Jaguars quickly capitalized, with Menning running in from 5 yards out four plays later to put the Jaguars up 16-0.

Colome coach Ben Connot said it was the slow start that was his team's downfall.

"Starting down 16-0 didn't help at all," Connot said. "We struggled moving the ball. We had our chances but we couldn't capitalize."

Jackson Kinzer answered with a 2-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter to get the Cowboys on the board with a 16-6 deficit.

In the second half, both defenses stood tall but it was the Jaguars defense that came up big twice. Colome recovered a fumble and made a tackle on a botched punt snap to score solid field position but on both occasions, the Jaguars stopped Colome on downs and preserved the lead.

A fourth-quarter touchdown run from Caysen Eide from 23 yards out sealed the deal for Corsica-Stickney, which improved to 7-0 on the year and will head to Gayville-Volin to end the regular season on Friday. Menning led the Jaguars with 33 carries for 76 yards and two touchdowns. The Jaguars had 179 yards rushing and outgained Colome 187-118 for the game.

Wyatt Cahoy led the Cowboy defense with 13 tackles with Layton Thieman having 10 stops, as Colome (6-1) heads to Avon Friday.
