Hitchcock Park hosts annual Mitchell Junior Tennis Classic

The Mitchell Junior Tennis Classic hosted 64 players at its annual tournament Saturday and Sunday at Hitchcock Park.

Twenty-four Mitchell players made up the 64-player tournament, which featured 14 divisions and players from 10 to 18 years old.

Mitchell’s Delaney Degen and Megan Mastel were winners of the 14 girls doubles tournament. They knocked off Watertown’s Faith Berg and Ellie Zink (4-0, 4-2) in the title match.

In the 18 boys singles division, Kade Clark defeated Connor Thelen in the quarterfinals (6-4, 6-1). Clark then lost to Yankton’s Gage Becker (6-3, 6-3) in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, Mitchell’s Macon Larson defeated Mitchell’s Aidan Patrick (6-4; 7-6(3)) in the finals.

In the 12 boys singles, Mitchell’s Adam Wagner finished 2-1. He recorded a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mitchell’s Dylan Putnam. Wagner also defeated Mitchell’s Kaden Putnam by a 6-1, 6-0 score.


In the 10 boys singles division, Mitchell’s Clay Bathke went 2-1 in the four-player field. He also knocked off Mitchell’s Cooper Star (6-3).

In boys doubles action, Thelen and Harrisburg’s Marcus Halling advanced to the finals of the 18 division. They lost to Becker and Wayzata, Minnesota’s Maddox Lundell (4-0, 4-1) in the finals.

Atlanta Stahle posted a 2-1 record in the 18 girls division. In the 16 girls division, Mitchell’s Amber Moller and Kiersten Bathke both advanced to the semifinals. Moller lost to Sioux Falls’ Emma Rangel (6-4, 6-4) in the semifinals. Yankton’s Maggie Schaefer, the eventual winner in the division, defeated Bathke (6-2, 6-0) in the semifinals. Mitchell’s Julia Platt was the consolation winner. She defeated Luverne, Minnesota’s Elisabeth Kelm (6-2, 6-2) in the consolation final.

In the 14 girls division, Delaney Degen lost to Yankton’s Nora Krajewski (6-4, 6-0) in the title match. Degen defeated Mitchell’s Tristen Zimmer (6-1, 6-0) in the opening match. Degen topped Yankton’s Sabrina Krajewski (6-4, 6-3) in the semifinals. Mitchell’s Carsyn Weich advanced to the semifinals, but lost to Nora Krajewski (6-0, 6-4).

Mitchell’s Megan Mastel posted a 3-0 record in the 12 girls division. She defeated Mitchell’s Maddie Childs (6-0, 6-0) and Mitchell’s Josie Eitemiller (6-0, 6-0). Childs topped Eitemiller, 6-2, 6-2.

In 18 girls doubles play, Platt and Sioux Falls’ Grace Starr lost to Sioux Falls’ Emily Hanson and Emma Rangel (4-0, 4-2) in the title match.

Clark and Moller took second in the 18 mixed doubles tournament. They lost to Brandon’s Michaela Jerke and Sioux Falls’ Gavin Schmit (8-3) in the finals.
