Hegg, Lehr lead MHS boys to pair of wins in first match

PIERRE -- Mitchell's No. 5 Alex Hegg and No. 6 Brenden Lehr each won all four matches to help lead the Kernel boys' tennis team to two wins in its opening match over Pierre and Rapid City Central Tuesday.

PIERRE -- Mitchell's No. 5 Alex Hegg and No. 6 Brenden Lehr each won all four matches to help lead the Kernel boys' tennis team to two wins in its opening match over Pierre and Rapid City Central Tuesday.

"They were very strong all day," Mitchell coach Pat Moller said. "We're really looking for some good things from them. They showed that those expectations are warranted."

The Kernels (2-0) defeated Eastern South Dakota Conference rival Pierre 5-4 and Rapid City Central 7-2 without their No. 1 player Jacob Cersosimo, who is in Troy, Mich., for a national hockey tournament.

"Anytime you take your best player off your team, it's going to hurt, but we responded well," Moller said. "This was a big confidence booster as we begin the season. I was very encouraged by what I saw in our hustle and competitiveness."

The Kernels won 9 of their 12 singles matches on the day and No. 2 Beau Brown and No. 4 Tate Crago each won both singles matches for the Kernels.

"I thought we were very strong in singles but our youth did show in doubles," said Moller, whose team was 3-3 in doubles in the triangular. "Experience shows in doubles and we have to learn and get better."

Mitchell's next match is Thursday as it hosts St. Thomas More and Huron in a triangular. The match was originally set for March 22 but was postponed due to cold weather. Friday's match begins at 12:30 p.m. at Hitchcock Park in Mitchell.
