HURON-Mitchell Post 18 is back to playing .500 baseball for the season after it defeated Huron 5-2 in a Legion baseball game on Wednesday.
Calvin Hegg shined for Mitchell (19-19) on the mound in a complete-game effort. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk, while striking out five batters.
"Calvin Hegg did an unbelievable job throwing for us tonight with the amount of pitches he was able to throw in a complete game," said Post 18 manager Luke Norden. "Seven innings with 86 pitches, he just did a great job."
With only two strikeouts, Hegg relied on his defense to make plays. Mitchell committed two errors, but Norden was impressed with his outfield on a windy night.
"(Hegg) got a lot of balls in play early. It was kind of tricky with the wind," Norden said. "(Huron) hit some balls hard, and we had to make some good plays in the outfield on line drives. They didn't really hit too many lazy fly balls and only had two strikeouts, so the majority of our outs came good plays from our outfield."
At the plate, Sam Michels, Brady Hawkins and Carter Max accounted for Post 18's three hits. Michels and Hawkins both drove in a run.
Mitchell took advantage of a couple of Huron miscues, including when it tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh.
"Sam (Michels) was able to do a good job with two strikes and hit the ball the opposite way in order to get a (RBI) triple, and (Austin) Kerr did a really good job running all the way from first," Norden said. "They didn't bring the infield in after Sam got to third, so Brady just grounded the ball out and was able to drive another run in."
