After a strong showing at the Dordt College Invite Saturday, Dakota Wesleyan University's Ben Hammer has received Great Plains Athletic Conference men's field athlete of the week honors.

A freshman from Dell Rapids, the 6-foot-8 Hammer set a new school record in the discus after a toss of 51.75 meters, finishing second for the meet. It was just his second time competing in the event collegiately and he passed the DWU school record by 11 feet. Hammer is now qualified for the NAIA national meet.

He finished first in the shot put (15.31 meters) and was eighth in the hammer throw. Hammer was 15th at the national indoor meet earlier this season in the shot put.
