ABERDEEN -- The Mitchell High School gymnastics team captured second place in the Class AA state gymnastics meet on Friday.
The Kernels were attempting to dethrone conference rival Watertown, but couldn’t top the Arrows at Golden Eagles Arena. Watertown successfully defended its crown with 145.925, while Mitchell finished with 144.750.
The two powerhouses went back and forth all season long, but the Arrows separated themselves late in the season. They did it again on Friday, but Mitchell coach Audra Rew still praised the effort of the Kernels.
“I am just proud of the way they competed,” Rew said. “They stayed excited no matter what mistakes were made. They didn’t let it get in their head and we closed that gap and I am really proud of them.”
Deuel won the Class A title with a 144.050. Parkston/Ethan/Hanson/Mount Vernon took fourth with a 130.550.
