SIOUX FALLS -- Mitchell High School won its second gymnastics meet in three days on Monday and did so with some of its regulars resting.

The Kernels captured the championship at the Sioux Falls Roosevelt quadrangular with a total score of 138.500, beating its hosts by 13 points. Parkston/Ethan/Hanson/Mount Vernon was third with 120.500 and Wagner/Bon Homme was fourth with 117.600.

Audra Rew wanted to see if some of her younger gymnasts could crack the regular rotation and Mitchell responded by winning each individual event. The Kernels also had the top three spots in the all-around, led by champion Joslin Sommerville with 34.400 points.

“The plan was to try some new skills to see if some new kids could break into the lineup,” Rew said. “I want to be able to put the best top-five on the floor, so I wanted to see if there was anybody that improved over Christmas break and give them an opportunity to compete, be judged and see how they performed.”

Mitchell’s Chelsey Mohr finished atop the standings in the uneven bars (8.850) and vault (9.100), but Sommerville nipped her and classmate Tabitha Sadler by 0.300 points in the all-around. The seventh-grader won the floor exercise with a 9.200, while taking third in the bars (8.450), fifth in the beam (8.300) and 10th in the vault (8.450).

Where Rew felt the Kernels shined was in the beam, taking four of the top-five spots, including a first-place finish by Masy Mock (8.900). Bentley Bates was third with an 8.450, while Sadler was fourth with an 8.350. Wagner/Bon Homme’s Alexys Rueb was second with an 8.700.

“Scores were really low, my top-five did OK, but everybody that wasn’t in my top-five really hit some great beam routines,” Rew said. “It really shows how great we’re going to be in the future. I was excited about that. Joslin Sommerville got her top score in floor and if she continues that, it’s really going to help us down the road.”

Rue was fifth in the all-around at 33.000. Mock was sixth (32.500), while PEHMV’s Tyra Zens was seventh (32.150) and teammate London Sudbeck was eighth (32.150).

Mitchell is back in action at the Huron Invitational on Friday and the Pierre Invitational on Saturday.
