The Mitchell High School gymnastics team started its season with a bang.

The Kernels had the top-four finishers in the all-around to roll past Parkston/Ethan/Hanson and Yankton in a triangular on Monday at MEGA in the season opener. Mitchell totaled 142 points, while Yankton was the runner-up with 125.9 and PEH finished with 115.7.

Not only did all four individual events go to the Kernels, but they also earned the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in each event as well.

"I saw great scores from them right off the bat," MHS head coach Audra Rew said. "There's a few areas they need to clean things up a bit and get ready for the big meets, but what a way to start things off. I'm really excited about it."

Mitchell’s Emily Moody showed off her versatility, taking the top spot in two events and second in two more to finish with the top all-around score of 36.35, edging teammate Gracie Czmowski by a full point.

Moody captured wins in the floor exercise with a 9.45, while also winning the vault with a score of 9.40. She also finished second to Czmowski’s winning score of 9.50 in the balance beam with a 8.90, while finishing 0.25 points behind fellow Kernel Kyra Gropper in the uneven bars. Gropper finished with an 8.85, while Moody posted an 8.60.

"She's really increased her level of difficulty, especially in bars," Rew said. "She's never even been in my bar lineup. At least tonight, I feel like Emily has put the whole package together. Her difficulty is great and I'm excited about how hard she's worked in the offseason."

Czmowski was also third in the vault at 8.80 and third in the floor exercise at 9.10.

Gropper was third in the all-around (34.05), adding to her win in the bars with a runner-up finish in the floor (9.35). Mitchell’s Masy Mock was fourth in the all-around at 33.05, while Tabitha Sadler was eighth at 32.15.

Mock was tied for third in the beam with PEH’s Tyra Zens at 8.30, while Chelsey Mohr was second in the vault at 9.05 and third in the bars at 8.30.

"It's nice to see a variety of kids stepping up," Rew said. "Kyra Gropper on floor, Maddi Lord on beam, Tessa Allen on beam -- I saw glimpses of greatness from a lot of different kids. Chelsey Mohr looked great tonight. It was fun to see such variety."
