BROOKINGS-The Mitchell High School gymnastics season came to a strong close on individual competition day at the state meet Saturday, as three Kernels placed in the top-five of the Class AA all-around competition at the Swiftel Center.

Senior Maria Krall took second place with a score of 36.675, followed by Kaylee Bauder in third place (36.400) and Alyssa Hughes in fifth place (36.075). Watertown's Myah Morris won the Class AA all-around for a second-straight year with a score of 38.425.

Mitchell was collectively strong on bars, beam and vault on Saturday. Krall was second on the bars, scoring 9.050, with Hughes (8.800) and Bauder (8.775) taking fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Kernels were led on beam by Krall's score of 9.425, followed by Bauder in fourth place with a 9.400. Hughes was seventh with a score of 9.050, and Tabitha Sadler placed 12th (8.650).

Mitchell placed five competitors in the top-12 in the vault, led by Bauder's fifth-place finish (9.125). Krall and Emily Moody each grabbed sixth place (9.100), while Hughes was tied for ninth (9.075). Kailee Henglefelt took 12th place (8.875) in the event.

Watertown's Morris, a freshman, won three of the four individual event titles for the second straight year, including a vault score of 9.925, which is the second-best vault all-time at the Class AA state meet. She also won the bars (9.400) and beam (9.550) titles, as well. Morris has now won nine individual titles, which is tied for third-most in Class AA state gymnastics history.

Rapid City Stevens' Shay Trimble claimed the floor exercise title with a score of 9.650. Morris was second in the event with a score of 9.550. Hughes had Mitchell's best score in the event with a 9.150, tying for seventh, while Bauder and Krall finished tied for ninth with scores of 9.100. Kyra Gropper was 15th (8.825) to finish in a placewinner position.

Deuel sweeps Class A titles

It was Deuel's day once more on Saturday in the Class A competition. A day after winning the Class A team title, three different Cardinals helped the school sweep the five individual titles, led by Morgan Kwasniewski's all-around title, with a score of 37.550.

Kwasniewski also won the beam (9.575) and floor titles (9.475). The Cardinals' Paige Simon won the Class A vault with a score of 9.325, while Rachel Blue had the top uneven bars routine (9.450).

PEH's McKenzie Prunty was 11th in the all-around scoring (33.950), with Emily Duffek, of Wagner/Bon Homme claiming 12th place (33.800). Prunty placed in three individual events, led by an 11th place finish on bears (8.075). Duffek also placed in three events, including finishing tied for sixth on floor (9.075).

PEH also had Jada Plastow finish 15th in the all-around (33.600) and London Sudbeck finished 16th (33.400), punctuated by her fourth-place individual finish on beam (9.050). Plastow was ninth on bars (8.200) and 11th on beam (8.725)

West Central/Montrose's Jocelyn Krouse, who previously competed on her own for Montrose before the formation of a co-op with West Central,, took second in the Class A all-around (36.725). She took third on bars (9.025) and beam (9.325), fourth on floor (9.225) and fifth in the vault (9.150).
