ABERDEEN—The Mitchell High School gymnastics team was edged by rival Watertown for the team title at the Aberdeen Central Invitational, but the Kernels are looking at the bigger picture.

Mitchell, which scored 143.475 points, took second to the Arrows (144.675) in the team standings. However, MHS coach Audra Rew noted the Kernels were trying new skills at the meet with the intent of being sharper late in the season.

"We took some chances and it didn't go our way," Rew said. "But that is OK. It is going make us better in February."

Rew admitted the Kernels made some mistakes in the new skills, but "I wanted them to take those risks. This the time of year you take chances. So we took those chances. We didn't come out with a win, but I feel in the long run, it is going to make them better as a team."

Watertown's Myah Morris won the all-around title with 37.65 points. Mitchell's Maria Krall placed third with 36.1 points. Rew said Krall had a slip up in her floor exercise, but said she will better because of it.

"We are going to kind of keep pushing it because she is not going to be the top floor person if she doesn't do that skill," Rew said. "It will be good in the long run, but she has a great day. She looked fantastic."

Morris and Mitchell's Emily Moody tied for first place in the floor with a 9.6.

Mitchell will host the Mitchell Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the MHS gym. It will start at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 10:45 a.m. on Saturday.
