RAPID CITY — Gregory’s Matt Johnson finishes runner-up at the South Dakota Golf Association’s Mid Amateur Championship, which took place Saturday and Sunday at The Golf Club at Red Rock in Rapid City.
Johnson shot a 72 in the opening round and a 70 in the final to finish 2-under-par for a total score of 142. Johnson was three strokes shy of tying first-place winner Tate McVay from Sturgis, who shot a 66 in the opening round and a 73 in the final round to finish 5-under-par for a total score of 139. Rounding out the top five was Rapid City’s Nicolas Heig and TJ Meyer tying for third-place with a score of 147 and Rapid City’s Shane Tipton finishing in fifth-place with a total score of 148.
Mitchell’s Russell Pick finished 11th out of the 70 contestants, shooting a 75 in the opening round and a 77 in the final round to end with a score of 152.
