Mitchell High School started the Rob Marchand Memorial Cup strong and resulted in picking up a win over Yankton Tuesday at Lakeview Golf Course.
The first six holes of the tournament were four ball (best ball) with one point per hole at stake and the Kernels came away with a 4-1 lead. The ensuing six holes were a scramble and Mitchell nipped Yankton 3-2, before playing even in the final six holes (individual match play) to secure a 12-8 win.
Masy Mock and Ella Flippin defeated the Gazelle tandem of Halle Stephenson and Morgan Sundleaf 2&1 at four ball, while Quinn Dannenbring and Allison Meyerink also scored a win over Yankton’s Jillian Eidsness and Tatum Hohenthaner by the same margin. Maddie Childs and Jaylie Rients and Lara Widstrom and Emily Moody earned 1-up wins to start the day.
Mock and Flippin again won on the scramble holes, while Dannenbring/Meyerink and Childs/Rients won 1-up contests. But the Gazelles came back as Shae Hanson/Lizzy Schwartz won 1-up and Madison Ryken/Sabrina Krajewski scored a 2-up win.
Mitchell clinched the win early in singles play, as Mock and Stephenson were all square at No. 1 singles. But Flippin, Dannenbring and Meyerink all scored wins to seal the tournament.
Childs was all square with Gracie Brockberg and Rients was all square with Elsie Larson, but Hanson, Schwartz, Ryken and Krajewski all won to pull the score closer for Yankton.
Mitchell will host an invitational against Pierre, Rapid City Central, Rapid City Stevens, Sioux Falls Lincoln, Sioux Falls Roosevelt, Sioux Falls Washington, Spearfish, Sturgis, Watertown and Yankton at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Lakeview Golf Course.
