Golden Eagles grab playoff win over Canistota

A fourth quarter rally powered Mitchell Christian into the District 8B girls basketball semifinals, beating Canistota 44-41 on Tuesday night at the Corn Palace.

A fourth quarter rally powered Mitchell Christian into the District 8B girls basketball semifinals, beating Canistota 44-41 on Tuesday night at the Corn Palace.

Carlie VanderPol's basket with 30 seconds left put the Golden Eagles up 43-41. Kelsey Thompson added a free throw with 10 seconds left to put MCS up by three points. Canistota had a last-second 3-pointer miss the mark, allowing Mitchell Christian to escape with a win.

"We fought a tough battle tonight," said MCS coach Jackie Van Laecken. "They did a good job on us defensively and we had to work hard to get the win. We were proud of the fight the girls put forth and how they finished the game."

Mitchell Christian led by five points at halftime but 15 points from the Hawks in the third quarter had Canistota ahead heading into the final eight minutes, 30-24. But a 20-point fourth quarter from the Golden Eagles was the difference in the victory.

Emily Reynen had 18 points and 11 rebounds in a double-double effort for the Golden Eagles. Kelsey Thompson and Taylor Lepke each had seven points and Abbie Reynen added six points, eight assists and seven steals for MCS.

For the Hawks, Kalli Ortman had 16 points and six assists. Macy Robertson added eight points for Canistota. Jordan Engbrecht had six points and six steals for the Hawks.

Mitchell Christian was 19-of-51 shooting in the game and made 3-of-8 free throws. Canistota made 14-of-44 field goals and was 8-of-16 on free throws. The Hawks had 19 turnovers and 30 rebounds. MCS had 17 turnovers and 33 rebounds.

Mitchell Christian will play top-seeded Hanson at the Corn Palace at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the District 8B semifinals.
