WAGNER -- Class 11B No. 2 Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan began its state championship defense by rolling by Wagner in the season-opener on Friday, 50-6.

Bodie Burnham ran for 131 yards and a touchdown, while Riley Endres ran for 79 yards and a score. Koby Kayser had 73 yards and scampered for two touchdowns and Kaden Klumb ran for 65 yards and a touchdown, while throwing for another 49 yards and a score.

The Seahawks outgained the Red Raiders 467-76 in total yards in the win.

The Seahawks (1-0) play Elk Point-Jefferson on Aug. 28 in Bridgewater. The Red Raiders (0-1) host Beresford on Aug. 28.

TRIPP --Kimball/White Lake’s comeback fell just short in a loss to Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Friday.

The Thunderhawks led 30-6 at halftime, but the WiLdKats scored three touchdowns in the second half to make it a one-possession game.

Cade Faulkner completed 9 of 17 passes for 117 yards and three touchdowns, while recording an additional 47 yards and a score on the ground during the win. Nolan Blackcloud caught two touchdowns, while Carson Koehn finished with a team-high 67 receiving yards and a touchdown. Logan Van Pelt rushed for 65 yards. Gavin Westendorf had a team-high nine tackles.

Nolan Kirsch recorded three total touchdowns, totaling 178 yards through the air and 109 on the ground for the WiLdKats. Ky Becker and Jayden Kahler each caught a touchdown, as Becker racked up a team-best 67 yards. Levi Nightingale recorded 12 tackles, a sack and 3.5 tackles for loss.

The Thunderhawks (1-0) travel to Colome on Aug. 28. The WiLdKats (0-1) play Lyman on Aug. 28 in Presho.

Lyman 12, Burke 8

PRESHO -- Lyman converted 3 of 5 fourth-down attempts to stave off Burke in a low-scoring season opener on Friday.

Teagan Gourneau threw for 91 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for a score and intercepting a pass on defense in the win. Colton Collins racked up 58 yards on the ground. Tyson Floyd caught five passes for 46 yards and a touchdown.

Tucker Even rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown for Burke, which recorded 178 yards. Brogan Glover picked off a pass.

The Raiders (1-0) play Kimball/White Lake on Aug. 28 in Presho. The Cougars (0-1) host Gregory on Aug. 28.

WWSSC 14, Chamberlain 0

FORESTBURG -- Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central clamped down on the Chamberlain offense to pick up a shutout win on Friday in Class 11B play.

The Blackhawks outgained Chamberlain 242-55, while holding the Cubs to 21 rushing yards on 19 attempts.

Clay Olinger scored both WWSSC touchdowns, rushing for a 31-yard first-quarter score and then scampered 44 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Olinger finished with 94 yards on six attempts. Carter Grohs also added 57 yards rushing and Tryce Slykhuis had 53 yards on the ground.

Chamberlain quarterback Cruz Soulek was 5 of 20 for 33 yards and three interceptions, two by Slykhuis.

The Blackhawks (1-0) travel to Garretson on Aug. 28. The Cubs (0-1) host Stanley County on Aug. 28.

Gregory 46, Gayville-Volin 8

GAYVILLE -- Class 9A No. 3 Gregory racked up 335 yards and 19 first downs in a win over Gayville-Volin on Friday.

Coy Determan completed 10 of 17 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns for Gregory. Michael Antelope rushed 15 times for 102 yards and two scores, while Owen Hansen and Kade Stukel both rushed for a touchdown. Stukel caught four passes for 91 yards and a touchdown. Rylan Peck had a 53-yard touchdown reception. Defensively, Jordan Vosika had 11 tackles and Stukel recorded 10 tackles.

Nathan Quatier threw for 130 yards and a touchdown, as Andrew Gustad caught four passes for 83 yards and a score. Kyle Hirsch rushed for 35 yards. Hirsch and Gustad both finished with eight tackles.

The Gorillas (1-0) travel to Burke on Aug. 28. The Raiders (0-1) play Colman-Egan on Aug. 28 in Colman.

Winner 52, Stanley County 7

FORT PIERRE -- Class 11B No. 1 Winner racked up 489 of its 510 yards on the ground in a win over Stanley County on Friday.

Sam Kruger led the Winner rushing attack with 147 yards and a touchdown. Riley Orel scored twice during a 95-yard game, while Kaden Keiser gained 61 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Evan Farner, Brady Fritz and Aaron Gilchrist each had a touchdown. Farner, Orel, Preston Norrid and Landon Thieman all had four tackles. Farner and Blake Volmer both picked off a pass.

Stanley County’s Lathan Prince finished with 133 passing yards, with 117 of those yards going to Gavin Irving. Evan Nordstrom recorded 103 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Trey Frost, Levi Stover and Nathan Cook all finished with seven tackles.

The Warriors (1-0) play St. Thomas More on Aug. 28 in Rapid City. The Buffaloes (0-1) travel to Chamberlain on Aug. 28.

Canistota/Freeman 46, Chester Area 0

CANISTOTA -- Class 9A No. 1 Canistota/Freeman jumped out to a 38-point halftime lead in a win over Chester Area on Friday.

Tyce Ortman threw for 66 yards and rushed for 106 yards during a four-touchdown performance. Isiah Robertson carried the ball eight times for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Blake Anderson also rushed for a score. Logan Katzer caught three passs for 58 yards. Clayton Smith and Noah Kleinsasser each had four tackles for the Pride. Collin Helma and Tate Tieszen both intercepted a pass.

For Chester Area, Max McGreevy rushed for a team-high 37 yards. Chase Mcdonald and Stratton Eppard each had five tackles.

The Pride (1-0) travel to De Smet on Aug. 28. The Flyers (0-1) travel to Avon on Aug. 28.

Scotland 22, Irene-Wakonda 0

SCOTLAND -- Stephen Johnson ran for 151 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries to push Scotland past Irene-Wakonda in Class 9B football action on Friday.

Turner Nicholson had 46 yards on the ground, while Daniel Lange had 38 for the Highlanders. Dawson Bietz went 4 of 8 for 42 yards passing, while adding 30 yards on the ground.

Scotland held Irene-Wakonda quarterbacks Christian Anderson and Dashel Spurrell to 6 of 29 passing for 65 yards. Spurrell led the team with 32 yards rushing.

The Highlanders (1-0) travel to Howard on Aug. 28. The Eagles (0-1) play Corsica-Stickney on Aug. 28 in Irene.

Alcester-Hudson 42, Avon 0

AVON -- Alcester-Hudson held Avon to 137 yards in a prep football shutout on Friday to open the season.

Jovey Christensen scored three times and racked up 100 yards for the Cubs. Alex Winquist recorded 76 rushing yards and two scores. Logan Serck led the Cubs with 104 rushing yards and passed for 102 yards, including 73 yards to Jaxon Doering. Winquist finished with 12 tackles and Doering added eight tackles.

Brady Bierema gained 68 yards on 15 carries for Avon. He also led the Pirates with eight tackles. Ashton Frank and Lincoln Thury both had eight tackles.

The Cubs (1-0) play Centerville on Aug. 28 in Alcester. The Pirates (0-1) host Chester Area on Aug. 28.

EPJ 40, MVP 6

MOUNT VERNON -- Elk Point-Jefferson scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to pull away from Mount Vernon/Plankinton in Class 11B action on Friday.

The Huskies outgained the Titans 391-94 in total yardage, while also holding a 22-4 advantage in first downs.

EPJ quarterback Noah McDermott went 6 of 9 for 133 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while Riley Schmitz ran for 145 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Tyler Goehring had four receptions for 92 yards and two scores.

MVP’s Reed Rus went 5-for-10 for 52 yards, including a touchdown pass to Drew Gerlach.

The Huskies (1-0) play Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan on Aug. 28 in Bridgewater. The Titans (0-1) play Wagner on Sept. 4 in Mount Vernon.

HOWARD -- Class 9A No. 2 Howard’s defense notched a season-opening shutout win over Castlewood on Friday.

Tisyn Spader went 8 of 11 for 88 yards, while Kieffer Klinkhammer ran for 106 yards and two touchdowns on seven attempts. Lane Miller ran for 93 yards and a score and Riley Genzlinger scored three rushing touchdowns.

Castlewood’s Tristin Nielsen went 4-for-14 for 32 yards passing.

The Tigers (1-0) host Scotland on Aug. 28. The Warriors (0-1) host Dell Rapids St. Mary on Aug. 28.

Wolsey-Wessington 34, Parkston 19

WOLSEY -- Class 9B No. 1 Wolsey-Wessington opened the season with a win over Parkston on Friday.

Wolsey-Wessington’s Jake Williams had seven tackles and two sacks. Payson Gohn recorded eight tackles. Offensively, Marty Gohn rushed for 235 yards and five touchdowns. Keegan Haider gained 83 yards on the ground.

Pakrston’s Brayden Jervik had 11 tackles and Cole Prunty finished with nine tackles. Max Scott caught four passes for 65 yards. Prunty added 192 yards and two scores on the ground.

The Warbirds (1-0) play Hitchcock-Tulare on Aug. 28 in Wolsey. The Trojans (0-1) play Kimball/White Lake on Sept. 4 in White Lake.
