Flandreau walloped 15 hits in seven innings to take down Mount Vernon, 11-0, in the Class B state amateur baseball tournament on Monday at Cadwell Park.
The Flandreau Cardinals scored three runs in the first two innings and scored five in the fourth to put this game out of reach. Grant Hieb was a huge contribution to the hot start for the Cardinals as he went 2 of 2 at the mound, had one RBI and scored one run in the first two innings.
“Grant Hieb has a ton of experience in these tournaments,” Flandreau manager Bret Severtson said. “He’s a guy that does a lot for us on the base pads. He brings some of that late season experience to us that a few other guys don’t have.”
Hieb finished the game 4 of 5 and scored two runs. Keith Cutler went 2 of 5, had two RBIs and scored two runs. Tim Huber went 2 of 4 with two RBIs and Severtson went 2 of 3 with two RBIs as well.
Dallas Schneiderman picked up the win at the mound for the Cardinals. He pitched all seven innings, threw five strikeouts and allowed three hits.

As for Mount Vernon, it committed all four of its errors within the first four innings, helping Flandreau get off to a 8-0 lead.
“In the state tournament, you have to play clean,” Mount Vernon manager Deric Denning said. “You limit your errors and your walks and that seems to be the teams that win. When you don’t do that, especially right away, it puts you in a hole.”
The Mustangs ended this game with three hits, two from Chase Hetland and one from Spencer Neugebauer.
At the mound, Briggs Havlik suffered the loss for Mount Vernon in 3 ⅓ innings. He struck out two and allowed one earned run on six hits. Deric Denning struck out three batters, but surrendered three earned runs on nine hits in three innings.
Flandreau will play Alexandria at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in the state quarterfinals.
