WAGNER -- The boys' discus throwers at the Region 5A track and field meet Thursday in Wagner put on a show.

Five athletes cleared 151 feet while two surpassed the 170-foot mark.

West Central took the boys' title for the meet with 148 points and Tri-Valley's 167 points on the girls' side were enough for a title.

For the boys' discus event, Ethan/Parkston's Anthony Huber came out on top with a meet-record throw of 176-feet, 1-inch.

"The wind helped quite a bit," Huber said.

McCook Central/Montrose's Gavin Gassman looked to be prepared to take the title before Huber's final throw. Gassman had a couple tosses that were well past most of the other competitors' marks and Huber had scratched twice in the finals, which consisted of three throws.

Gassman's best toss was 174-feet-9.

"I felt pretty good," Gassman said.

As for watching Huber top his throw at the very end Gassman said, "He's a good thrower and I've never been able to beat him. It was only a matter of time."

Both throwers topped the previous meet record held by Wagner's Tait Johannsen of 160-feet-9, set in 2009.

"I'm pretty excited to know that I have the record," Huber said.

Huber said the level of competition at the event made him want to step up his performance.

"When you have more competition you have to throw further to get past them," he said. "You're pushing each other and getting better throws."

While the strong right-to-left wind helped out most of the throwers, Wagner's Jack Robinson was forced to go against the wind as a left-handed thrower.

"It was a righties' day I guess," Robinson said.

Robinson was still able to finish in fifth-place with a throw of 151-feet-8, which surprised him.

"I'm glad with what I got on a day like this," he said.

Robinson jokingly added that it was unfair for the right-handed throwers to use the wind to add what he estimated to be an extra 10-feet to their throws.

Bon Homme's Charlie Bentzen and Wagner's Elijah Heth were the other competitors to clear 150-feet during the region meet.

Bentzen took third with a throw of 160-feet-7 while Heth finished fourth with a throw of 156-feet-1.
