FREMONT, Neb. -- The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball team’s defense stepped up on Saturday. It shut down Midland (Neb.) in a 76-47 Great Plains Athletic Conference win, giving the Tigers three straight victories.
Midland didn’t reach 15 points in any quarter, as it was held to 29.1 percent shooting and went 5-for-22 from 3-point range. Emma Shepard scored 15 points off the bench and Peyton Wingert added 12 points, but they combined to shoot 9 of 24 from the field.
The Tigers also forced 22 turnovers, with Kaylee Kirk recording a team-high four steals in the win.
Meanwhile, DWU shot 46.4 percent from the field and drained six 3s, helping it build an early 21-14 lead after the first quarter. The Tigers led 43-25 at halftime, and then extended it in the second half.
Once again, it was a balanced scoring attack for the Tigers. Tripp native Matti Reiner and Haidyn Pitsch scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, while Rynn Osthus chipped in 10 points. Salem native Natalie Gottlob led the bench with 12 points on 6-for-10 shooting, along with five rebounds. Aspen Hansen hit a pair of 3s to score eight points in seven minutes off the bench.
