ORANGE CITY, IOWA - Three Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball players scored in double figures but it was not enough as the Tigers fell to No. 2 Northwestern 85-76 in a Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday.

Junior guard Celeste Beck led the way with 17 points, freshman forward Erica Herrold chipped in with 15 points and senior guard Amanda Hart added 14 points.

“We didn’t shoot real well tonight,” said DWU coach Jason Christensen, whose team shot 7-of-26 from the three-point range and 25-of-66 from the field. “We needed to shoot better and we got into to foul trouble with our post players.”

After shooting 45 percent from the field in the first half, DWU (11-6, 4-4 GPAC) held a 39-36 lead. But the Northwestern (16-0, 8-0 GPAC) offense heated up in the second half and rode big performances from Mackenzie Small and Samantha Kleinsasser. Small scored 21 points, while Kleinsasser had 24 points and nine rebounds.

Alli Engebretson also chipped in with 12 points and 10 rebounds for Northwestern.

The Tigers and Red Raiders were tied at 55 with 11 minutes remaining in the contest, but Northwestern went on an 8-0 run to put distance between the teams.

DWU answered with an 11-4 run to get within one point, but the Red Raiders did not succumb to the pressure and slowly put the Tigers away.

“We played well the whole game, but we had a couple crucial turnovers and a missed layup at the end,” Christensen said. “We needed to play smarter down the stretch.”

DWU hits the court again Wednesday against Mount Marty at 6 p.m. at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
