SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- A pair of top-25 teams met on Saturday, and No. 7 Morningside College (Iowa) came away with an 84-62 win over the 14th-ranked Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball team.

The Great Plains Athletic Conference game was back-and-forth in the first half, as the Tigers (12-5, 5-4) answered Morningside’s runs. They clawed back from down nine points to trail 38-36 at the break. Alexandria native Kynedi Cheeseman scored 10 of her team-high 17 points in the first half. She also added six assists, five rebounds and three steals.

However, DWU struggled to find the same answers in the second half.

Sarah Carr, who notched a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double, made a 3-pointer to tie the game at 41-41 with 8:27 left in the third quarter, but Morningside (13-4, 8-2) proceeded to go on an 11-0 run. Sierra Mitchell hit back-to-back 3s, as she finished with a game-high 24 points on 6-for-10 3-point shooting.

The Tigers never got closer than seven points again. With 5:43 to play and Morningside leading 71-55, DWU emptied its bench and rested its starters for the rest of the contest.

The Mustangs led by as many as 22 points, in part due to their press forcing 31 turnovers. Sydney Hupp had 18 points and five steals, while four different Mustangs each added three steals. Morningside capitalized on its 21 steals, turning the takeaways into 41 points.

DWU shot 51 percent from the field, but couldn’t overcome its giveaways, even as it held the Mustangs to 40.5 percent shooting. Morningside made 12 3s, though. Sophia Peppers, who had 16 points, and Faith Meyer each hit a pair of 3s.

Jessica Mieras added six points and four rebounds off the bench. Plankinton native Makaela Karst recorded seven points, six assists and five rebounds, as the Tigers assisted on 19 of their 25 makes. They attempted 25 fewer shots than Morningside, which turned it over 19 times.

DWU plays No. 12 Northwestern (Iowa) at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Orange City, Iowa.
