SIOUX CENTER, Iowa -- It was a back-and-forth match between Dakota Wesleyan University and No. 22 Dordt (Iowa) on Saturday, but the Tigers’ upset bid fell just short. They dropped a five-set Great Plains Athletic Conference match, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22, 14-25 and 15-10.
After dropping the first set, DWU was able to hold on to knot the match after Dordt nearly erased the Tigers’ four-point advantage. A service error handed the Tigers the second set, though.
In the fourth set, DWU jumped out to a 6-2 lead and then went on a 7-0 run when Dordt tied it at 9-all. Rebecca Frick put down four of her team-high 26 kills during the run. The Defenders didn’t win back-to-back points the rest of the set.
DWU failed to erase an early four-point hole in the decisive fifth set, though. Dordt grew its lead to as many as six points.
Frick also added a team-high 17 digs. Jadie DeLange put down 15 kills, while Mallory Cooper and Danielle Burns recorded 15 and 11 digs, respectively. Bridgett Knobbe dished out 43 assists.
