DWU volleyball drops first game of season in GPAC opener

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa -- In the Great Plains Athletic Conference season opener, the Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team fell in three sets to Dordt (Iowa). The Defenders won, 25-17, 25-22 and 25-19.

The Tigers trailed 14-12 in the first set before Dordt ended on an 11-5 run to take an early lead. Then, in the second set, DWU dropped five of the final six points, which erased a 21-20 lead at the time. Dordt finished strong again in the third set, using an 8-4 advantage to close out the sweep.

Mariah Gloe finished with 11 kills and seven digs, while Hanna Reiff added a team-high 16 digs for the Tigers. Madeline Else chipped in 27 assists and 10 digs. Dannielle Burns and Reliance native Sara Herman had eight and six digs, respectively.

DWU (3-1, 0-1 GPAC) travels to Briar Cliff (Iowa) at 5 p.m. Saturday in Sioux City, Iowa.
