DWU men top Presentation for first win of season

SIOUX FALLS -- A quick start turned into the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team’s first win of the season. The Tigers took down Presentation College, 71-48, on Sunday at the Sanford Pentagon.

DWU shot 52.2 percent from the field in the first half to lead 30-18 at the break. It went on an 11-0 run midway through the half to gain a 23-10 lead, which it never relinquished. The Tigers led by as many as 28 points, as four starters scored in doubles figures.

Emery native Sawyer Schultz nailed a trio of 3-pointers during his 14-point performance, while Koln Oppold added 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Bradley Dean (11) and Mason Larson (10) both scored in double figures, as well. Jeffrey Schuch added eight points.

The Tigers shot 48.3 percent from the field, including 5 of 19 from 3-point range. Ace Zorr chipped in six points and four rebounds off the bench.

Meanwhile, its smothering defense forced 19 turnovers and held Presentation to 30.8 percent shooting. Ellis Evans (12) and Qaiyoom Olanlege (11) were the Saints’ two double-digit scorers.

DWU (1-1) plays Briar Cliff (Iowa) at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Corn Palace.
