HASTINGS, Neb. -- The Dakota Wesleyan University football team dropped its season opener on Saturday.
The Tigers fell to Hastings College by a 45-7 score in Great Plains Athletic Conference football action. DWU allowed Hastings College running back Tyree Nesmith to rush for 108 yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries. The Broncos finished with 247 rushing yards.
Jesse Ulrich added 184 passing yards and two touchdowns in the win.
For DWU, Zachary Lester passed for 192 yards and a touchdown pass to Chance Sorensen, who finished with 85 receiving yards.
After Hastings scored on its opening drive, Lester’s 70-yard touchdown strike to Sorensen made it 7-7 with 12:24 left in the second quarter. But the Broncos scored 45 unanswered points as DWU struggled to find its footing in the opener.

Jamin Arend finished with 43 rushing yards, while the Tigers ran for just 59 total yards.
The Tigers (0-1) play at Northwestern College on Sept. 18.
