DWU football drops GPAC game to Midland

FREMONT, Neb. -- The Dakota Wesleyan University football team’s losing streak reached six games on Saturday.

The Tigers traded touchdowns with Midland University through two quarters, but couldn’t maintain it as the Warriors pulled away for a 45-27 Great Plains Athletic Conference victory.

Dakota Wesleyan drops to 1-7 overall and 0-6 in the GPAC. The Tigers showed positive signs early on as their offense went score for score with the Warriors. DWU’s Zachary Lester scored a quarterback sneak with 47 seconds left in the first half to make it 21-all.

The Tigers managed just one more score (a defensive touchdown) the rest of the way. Midland quarterback Noah Oswald, who threw five touchdowns passes. Oswald hit Theo Blum on a fake field goal for a touchdown early in the third quarter, breaking the 21-21 tie.

The Warriors piled it on from there.

Lester finished with one passing touchdown and two rushing touchdowns. Lester’s 59-yard touchdown strike to Mitchell native Spencer Neugebauer tied the score at 7-7. After Mitchell native Cody Reichelt intercepted a Midland pass, Lester punched it in from six yards out for a 14-7 advantage.

The Warriors, however, rattled off 14 points as Oswald threw two straight touchdowns. Oswald’s second to Austin Harris made it 21-14 with 2:37 left before halftime. The Tigers’ offense quickly moved down the field and Lester’s QB sneak knotted it up at 21-21.

It was the final offensive touchdown of the day for DWU. DWU’s Zach Gors scored on a pick-six for its final score late in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers will host No. 1 Morningside College this Saturday at Joe Quintal Field.
