DWU, Fitts finish first in GPAC

Winning comes naturally for the Dakota Wesleyan University women's golf team. So naturally, the Tigers' golf team won for the fifth straight year Thursday at the Two Rivers Golf Course in Sioux City, Iowa.

The Wesleyan women finished first in the Great Plains Athletic Conference Qualifier No. 3 and GPAC Qualifier No. 4, en route to capturing its 10th title in 11 years.

GPAC Qualifier No. 3 was originally scheduled for April 9 in Hastings, Neb, but was canceled due to inclement weather.

The Tigers finished with a team score of 339 in the third qualifer, 327 in the fourth qualifier and an overall score of 1,351 through the four qualifier tournaments.

Wesleyan won the event by 71 strokes. Northwestern College (1,422) and Morningside (1,441) finished second and third, respectively.

"I am very proud of how well we played today," said DWU golf coach Adam Anderson, who's in his eighth year with the Tigers. "This is the most dominant performance I have seen since I have been at DWU."

The Tigers were led by Lauren Fitts, Chelsea Burback, Jenna Winckler, Talia Peters and Natalie Turner.

Fitts won the GPAC women's individual title with an overall score of 325.

"Lauren has been very consistent all year," Anderson said. "She hit very well (today), but overall she has been pretty consistent."

Burback and Winckler finished third and fourth, respectively. Burback shot 333, while Winckler finished five strokes behind after shooting a combined 338 to garner all-GPAC honors.

Peters, also took home all-GPAC honors, finishing ninth in the overall standings after shooting a combined 357 on Friday.

Natalie Turner was the fifth member of the squad. She finished with an overall score of 370.

"This group has a lot of fight in them, they never quit and they have a lot of heart," Anderson said.

With the win, the DWU women received an automatic berth in the NAIA National Championships, which will be held May 21-24, at Wilderness Ridge golf club in Lincoln, Neb.
