Doane snaps DWU volleyball’s three-game win streak

CRETE, Neb. -- The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team’s comeback efforts fell short on Saturday in a five-set Great Plains Athletic Conference loss to Doane (Neb.). Set scores were 25-19, 11-25, 27-25, 17-25 and 15-12.

After dropping the first set, DWU pulled away for a second-set win by rattling off eight straight points to build a 17-5 advantage. Doane didn’t get within single-digits for the rest of the set. However, Doane bounced back by stealing the third set. Mariah Gloe’s kill gave DWU a 25-24 lead, but Doane responded with three straight points to take the set.

Another big run sparked DWU in the fourth set, with a 7-1 run breaking open a tie and giving the Tigers a 20-14 advantage. DWU won five of the next eight points to ti the match. DWU nearly took the match when Gloe’s kill handed it an 11-10 lead in the fifth set, but Doane ended on a 5-1 run to take the match.

Gloe finished with 19 digs and 12 kills, while Ady Dwight put down a team-best 18 kills. Mitchell native Mackenzie Miller chipped in 15 kills. Hanna Reiff had a team-high 28 digs. Madeline Else recorded 53 assists and 19 digs.

DWU (11-7, 7-7 GPAC) hosts College of St. Mary at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Corn Palace.
