District tournaments start this week: Amateur teams to play for state bids

Thirty-two bids for the Class B state amateur baseball tournament are up for grabs starting this week.

The 32-team, single elimination tournament is Aug. 5-16 at Mitchell’s Cadwell Park. Teams will start punching their tickets to the tournament this week and next week.

Here is a quick rundown of the area district-qualifying tournaments:

District 3B

When/where: Saturday-through-July 30 in Chamberlain.

Defending champion: Plankinton Bankers.


Participating teams/available bids: Seven teams playing for four spots.

Outlook: Kimball/White Lake and Plankinton both finished with 10-2 Pony Hills League records. Kimball/White Lake received the No. 1 seed and regular season title after going 2-0 against the Bankers this season. … The Nationals, who are coming off a 4-3 11-inning victory over Miller/Wessington on Monday, will play the Colome vs. Four Corners winner on Sunday. … South Central plays Miller/Wessington on Saturday, while Plankinton plays Chamberlain in the other first round game. … Plankinton, Four Corners, Chamberlain, Kimball/White Lake and South Central all qualified for state last season.

District 4B

When/where: Friday-through-Aug. 1 in Dell Rapids.

Defending champion: Flandreau Cardinals.

Participating teams/available bids: Ten teams playing for seven spots.

Outlook: Lennox earned the No. 1 seed after going 8-1 in the Cornbelt League this season. Lennox plays the Dell Rapids PBR vs. Colman winner on Saturday. … Canova went 7-3 to earn the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. Canova will play the Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks vs. Salem winner on Saturday. … No. 4 Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks will play No. 5 Flandreau on Saturday, No. 3 Dell Rapids Mudcats will play No. 6 Madison in the other first round contest. … Dell Rapids Mudcats, Flandreau, Canova, Lennox, Madison and Salem all advanced to last year’s state tournament.

District 5B

When/where: Thursday-through-July 31 in Corsica.

Defending champion: Alexandria Angels.


Participating teams/available bids: Seven teams playing for five spots.

Outlook: Alexandria, which won last year’s Class B state title, earned the District 5B top seed after going 11-1 in the Sunshine League. The Angels earned a first-round bye and will play the Parkston vs. Dimock/Emery winner on Sunday. … Winner/Colome is the No. 2 seed and will face No. 7 Corsica/Stickney on Friday. Winner/Colome handed Alexandria its only league loss of the season. … No. 3 Mount Vernon will play No. 6 Platte in Friday’s other first-round game. … Alexandria, Winner/Colome, Corsica/Stickney, Dimock/Emery and Mount Vernon all played in last year’s state tournament.

District 6B

When/where: Thursday-through-Aug. 1 in Menno

Defending champion: Wynot (Nebraska) Expos.

Participating teams/available bids: Eight teams playing for five spots.

Outlook: Tabor and Menno both posted 13-5 South Central League records. Tabor earned the No. 1 seed due to a coin toss. … The Bluebirds open the tournament against No. 8 Scotland on Thursday. No. 2 Menno faces No. 7 Irene on Thursday. … No. 4 Lesterville plays No. 5 Wynot (Neb.) on Thursday, while No. 3 Crofton (Neb.) faces No. 6 Freeman in Friday’s other first-round contest. … Tabor, Wynot, Crofton, Menno and Freeman all made it to last year’s state tournament.
