Day 3 State Legion roundup: Brandon Valley escapes a pesky Pierre squad to advance to final four

Brandon Valley catcher Thomas Scholten blocks a low pitch during a Class A state American Legion game against Pierre on Sunday at Cadwell Park.

Every time Pierre Post 8 attempted to make a comeback, Brandon Valley Post 131 had an answer.

Brandon Valley took a 4-0 lead in the third inning and when Pierre got on the board in the fourth, Post 131 responded with two more in the fifth. Even when Post 8 scored three in the bottom of the fifth, Brandon Valley scored a run in both of the final two innings to win, 8-4.

Jaxon Haase paced the Post 131 offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Dane Peyton, Joe Kolbeck and Cole Siegfried each drove in a run.

Michael Chevalier got the win after allowing two earned runs on five hits and three walks in four innings, while striking out five. Chevalier was also 3-for-4 with an RBI at the plate.

Andrew Coverdale had two hits and an RBI, while Matthew Lusk and Cade Hinkle both drove in runs. Grey Zabel was 2-for-3 for Pierre.

Post 8 starting pitcher Jack Van Camp was chased after 2 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits.

Pierre finishes the season 21-21.
