Dakota Valley and Tyndall claim under-16 state VFW baseball titles

Both Dakota Valley and Tyndall claimed the 2021 South Dakota VFW under-16 state baseball titles on Sunday.

CLARK -- Tyndall won the VFW 16U Class B tournament as it didn’t allow more than one run over the three-game stretch. Tyndall shut out FH Hitmen 6-0 in the first round, beat Clark 12-1 on Saturday evening in the semifinals, and routed Canova in the championship 10-0 on Sunday.

Canova beat Mount Vernon/Plankinton 10-2 and edged Elkton 3-2 to reach the championship and compete against Tyndall. Area teams Scotland/Menno and Mount Vernon/Plankinton lost both their games in round one. Scotland/Menno would lose its second game as well to FH Hitmen 12-2, but Mount Vernon/Plankinton defeated Baltic 8-1 on Saturday and had 11 hits in the 9-3 victory on Sunday to win the consolation championship.

One-seeded Dakota Valley captured the Class A championship with a 4-3 win over Madison Black in Madison. In the process of accomplishing this feat, Dakota Valley edged Dell Rapids in round one 4-3 and defeated West Central in the semifinals 6-4. Madison Black beat Beresford 12-3 and Wagner 10-3 to reach the championship.

Wagner lost its chance at third place bragging rights in the Class A bracket after losing to West Central 9-7 on Sunday, however, Wagner did win its first-round matchup against Volga 9-1.
