The Chamberlain High School boys golf team captured the Region 3A title on Monday. The Cubs carded a 356, edging Parkston by one stroke for the team title.
Chamberlain qualified its entire team for the Class A state golf tournament on Oct. 5-6 Southern Hills Golf Course in Hot Springs. The Cubs also had the individual medalist, but it wasn’t who they expected it to be.
Chamberlain freshman Dakota Munger, who fired an 81 on the breezy and cold day at Lakeview Golf Course, anticipated one of his senior teammates Cameron Caldwell or Drayton Priebe to win it.
“I was coming up 15 and my coach said I had a chance,” Munger said. “I just tried to turn it on a little bit and ended up winning it. … I just hit my driver really well. I found a lot of fairways, found a lot of greens and I made a lot of putts.”
Munger, who shot a 39 on the front nine and a 42 on the back nine, edged Parkston’s Payton Koehn and Redfield’s Isaac Suchor by two strokes for the title.

“It was really windy and a lot of people struggled today I am pretty sure,” Munger said. “It was just nice that I could battle through it and push through it and actually shot a good score.”
Chamberlain coach Chris Caldwell knew Munger had the round in him.
“It’s really big for him,” Caldwell said. “He’s been shooting between 85 and 89. I told him ‘You are better than that. You should be shooting between 75 and 80.’ He actually went and started hitting his drive down the middle and everything worked out for him.”
Parkston’s Quinn Bormann shot an 84, while Caldwell shot an 86. Priebe carded a 99, while Chamberlain freshman Sandler Wiekamp a 94 and sophomore Max Kelsey shot a 95.
Coach Caldwell was skeptical midway through the round, but his underclassmen stepped up down the stretch.
“We don’t even know if we are going to go as a team,” coach Caldwell said. “But my two freshmen and one sophomore led the way.”
The Cubs will now turn their attention to the state meet.
“It’s big confidence boost for me and my team,” Munger said. “We are going to be looking forward to state.”
