ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- The Dakota Wesleyan University cross country teams were in action Saturday to close the regular season at the Great Plains Athletic Conference championships, with the men taking ninth place and the DWU women in 11th place.
The race was hosted by Northwestern at Landsmeer Golf Course in Orange City, Iowa.
The DWU men scored 252 points for ninth place. Dordt powered its way to the men's team championship with the minimum number of points: 15. The Defenders had the top six runners in the men's 8,000-meter race, led by senior Davis Tebben (25:52.77). Freeman Academy alumnus Thaniel Schroeder was one of the Dordt pushers, finishing 22nd in a time of 27:40.39.
Freshman Caleb Sayler pulled down a top-40 finish for the Tiger men on an individual front with a time of 28:57.25 for 39th place. Wyatt Baldauf took 47th place (29:19.85), with Justin Sorensen in 51st place (29:57.52), Hunter Shanks taking 70th place (30:51.11) and Zach Fieber in 83rd place (33:34.21).
The Tiger women finished 11th in the 12-team women's standings with 336 points. Dordt was the team champion with 54 points scored, edging Hastings' 77 points and Morningside in third with 79 points.
Hastings' Shania Santos was the women's individual champion in a time of 18:45.03 in the 5,000-meter race.
Morgan Oedekoven was DWU's top women's performer in the race, finishing 63rd (22:25.18). Mitchell native Annika Vermeulen finished 72nd (22:52.05), while Plankinton product Hallie Schmidt was 92nd (27:02.21), Baylee Field was 96th (30:31.79) and Delanie Larson was 97th (30:57.44).
Both DWU teams had only had five runners in the field.
