OACOMA — On the legs of boys individual champion Dom Santiago and girls runner-up Kinsey Evans, Chamberlain claimed both Region 4A team titles on a breezy Thursday afternoon at the Chamberlain Country Club.

Santiago’s time of 16 minutes, 12.18 seconds was more than 30 seconds faster than that of runner-up Kade Watson of Winner in the boys race, while Evans finished in 18:57.38, only behind the mark of Mobridge-Pollock’s Heidi Olson (18:35.88), in the girls race.

“It feels great,” Santiago said. “This is the third time I’ve won this race, so I know I always have to go out and set the pace, especially on the home turf.”

Chamberlain’s team score of 20 on the boys side edged the runner-up mark of 28 set by Winner, as the girls team score of 10 bested second place Stanley County, which finished with 34. Mobridge-Pollock’s score of 47 beat out Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (49) for third place in the boys standings, but SCW claimed third place in the girls standings with a score of 54.

“The boys ran out of their minds,” said Chamberlain coach Holly Evans. “They knew what they had to do and I think they stepped up to the challenge. I thought the girls ran really well, too, with five finishing in the top 10.”

Watson (16:46.09), Sanborn Central/Woonsocket’s Jeff Boschee (17:53.34), Todd County’s Thaddeus Allen (18:02.25) and Chamberlain’s Declan Tveit (18:07.28) rounded out the top five placings on the boys side.

Fellow Cubs joining Santiago and Tveit in the top 20 individual placings out of a field of 49 runners were Sam Byers (18:15.06), Isaac Shepherd (18:34.28) and Jack Swanson (18:47.09).

Rounding out the top five in the girls race behind Olson and Evans were Chamberlain’s Kylah Biggins (19:15.62), Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s Suri Schmidt (19:48.50) and Chamberlain’s Aine Graesser (19:53.31).

For the Chamberlain girls, Allison Hough (20:29.72), Grace Mousseau (21:12.84) and Samantha Peppel (21:51.81) also finished in the top 12 in a field of 30 runners.
