BRANDON — The Mitchell High School cross country teams were in action Saturday at the nine-team Eastern South Dakota Conference meet at McHardy Park in Brandon.
Mitchell’s Kennedy Olsen had the best finish of the Kernels’ varsity runners on the day, finishing 26th in the girls varsity race in a time of 22 minutes, 20.84 seconds in a field of 59 runners. Brandon Valley’s Addison Scholten was the race winner, finishing in 19:08.38, topping her teammate Mia Wentzy (19:31.49).
Other Mitchell girls runners in the varsity race included Alexis Daley (47th, 23:43.89), Lindsay Andersen (52nd, 24:14.06), Adelyn Prunty (57th, 25:42.43) and Anna Driscoll (59th, 27:09.80).
MHS finished with 215 team points, last among the eight teams competing in the girls team scoring (Huron did not score as a team.). With five of the top-10 finishers, Brandon Valley won the girls team title on their home course with 29 points, followed by Harrisburg (48), Aberdeen Central (100), Watertown (110) and Brookings (133) rounding out the top-five.
Mitchell’s best finisher in the boys varsity race was Brock Russell, who finished 52nd in a time of 19:21.27. Other MHS boys varsity runners in 81-man race included Elijah Schroeder (61st, 19:55.32), Owen Raml (68th, 20:26.15), Brennan Penne (71st, 20:34.46), Grayson Hetland (72nd, 20:35.26), Carter Moller (73rd 20:47.30), Max Hart (74th, 20:48.03), Nate McCormick (76th, 21:01.49) and Dawson Schroeder (80th, 22:53.59).
Mitchell finished last among the nine teams in the boys field, scoring 277 in the team scoring. Aberdeen Central won the ESD team title with 53 points, edging Harrisburg’s 55 points. Pierre (76), Brandon Valley (92) and Yankton (121) rounded out the top-five teams.
In the subvarsity races, Talli Peschong (18:10.31) and Aspen Evers (18:12.34) finished seventh and eighth overall, respectively, in the 4,000-meter girls junior varsity race, won by Harrisburg’s Regyn Peska (17:08.53). Mitchell did not score as a team in the race, won by Brandon Valley.
The boys JV race was won by Aberdeen Central’s Rylan Johnson at 4,000 meters (14:24.34), with Austin Reimnitz (16:31.84) taking 29th place as Mitchell’s top finisher. The Kernels were sixth as a team, with Brandon Valley winning the boys JV team title.
The top junior-high runners at 3,000 meters included Mitchell’s London Hajek (34th, 14:38.27) in the girls race and Jakobi Brink (46th, 13:15.21) in the boys race. As a team, the Kernel boys junior high team was eighth, and the girls' team was ninth.
