SIOUX FALLS — The University of South Dakota's Ella Byers, a Chamberlain High School graduate, was named the Summit League women's cross country athlete of the week on Tuesday for the second time this season.

Byers, a third-year sophomore won her first collegiate cross country meet title on Oct. 1 at the Briar Cliff Invitational. She clocked a season-best 17:39.22 for the Adams Nature Preserve 5,000-meter course in North Sioux City. She has led the Coyotes with the fastest time in three straight meets.

It marks the fifth-fastest time in the Summit League this fall, and Byers led the USD women to their second meet title this fall. Two weeks ago, Byers was honored by the conference for her top-20 performance at a meet at the University of Nebraska.

Byers was joined in the awards again by USD men's junior runner Merga Gemeda, who has won the men's Summit weekly award four times this season.
