Crofton downs Dell Rapids Mudcats

Cameron Kerkhove held the Dell Rapids Mudcats to just five hits as the Crofton (Neb.) Blue Jays advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1 at the Class B state amateur baseball tournament on Tuesday at Cadwell Park.

Cameron Kerkhove held the Dell Rapids Mudcats to just five hits as the Crofton (Neb.) Blue Jays advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1 at the Class B state amateur baseball tournament on Tuesday at Cadwell Park.

Kerkhove, a pick-up player from the Menno Mad Frogs, did not record a strikeout, while allowing one unearned run with two walks in eight innings pitched. Rand Thygeson recorded the final three outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Blue Jays scored three runs in the sixth inning and added on three more in the eighth inning. Thygeson led the offense, going 3-for-3 with a home run, while Jarod Wiebelhaus added two hits and two RBIs. James Kaiser had two hits and Carl Schieffer added a double.

For the Mudcats, Collin Karst took the loss. Karst allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk in seven innings pitched. Nate Alfson gave up three earned runs in 2/3 innings pitched with one strikeout, while Mark Houck recorded the final out in the loss.

Deon Entringer had a double, while Chad Hunt added an RBI. Nate Henry, Kris King, Grant Olson and Houck each had one hit.

Crofton advances to face Harrisburg in the quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
