Cougars fall to Warner, take 4th at state

Burke's Lainee Schonebaum (2) goes up for a kill against a pair of Warner defenders on Saturday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

RAPID CITY -- Fourth place wasn’t the goal, but Burke made some more school history on Saturday.

The Cougars were defeated by powerhouse Warner in the Class B third-place match at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The set scores were 25-27, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-20.

Burke was making its third-straight trip to the state volleyball tournament and it improved each year. The Cougars took sixth in 2017, fifth last season and fourth this season for the best finish in school history.

“We are just so happy and proud that we made school history again,” Burke coach Billie Jo Indahl said. “We got better every single year and that’s always a goal.”

Burke was looking to defeat Warner for the second time this season, but after sneaking out the first set, the Monarchs pulled out three more close sets to capture third.

“Keri Jung has done such a phenomenal job with that program,” Indahl said. “They are just such a different team than when we played them before and we knew that. We knew that going in. It was going to be just like last night (against Faulkton Area). It was going to be point-by-point and it was going to be a battle.”

The Monarchs strung together a few more runs and they were able to run their offense more effectively. Warner’s Jennifer Aman and Danille Seymour both finished with 15 kills apiece.

“I just wish we could have passed the ball a little bit better so we could run our offense,” Billie Jo Indahl said. “It comes down to defense and they passed the ball so well and they were able to utilize all their hitters.”

Taylee Indahl led the Cougars with 28 of their 47 kills. She added 16 digs in her final high school volleyball match.

“We made history for our school and got fourth place,” Taylee Indahl said. “It’s the best we’ve ever done. I am just happy that we did that.”

Fellow senior Lainee Schonebaum added 12 kills and 16 digs. Bobbi Jo Wischmann dished out 35 assists and had 14 digs. Adisyn Indahl finished with a team-high 23 digs.
