Cornbelt, Great Plains Conferences set matchups for final week

The Cornbelt Conference and Great Plains Conference football matchups for Friday were released on Tuesday.

The “Conference Championship week” features cross-division championship games in some nine-man conferences. The games are assigned by the South Dakota High School Activities Association, which handles all regular-season football scheduling. Teams were assigned to be home or away prior to the start of the season.

The Cornbelt Conference championship game between Class 9AA No. 1 Viborg-Hurley (7-0) and Class 9A No. 1 Howard (7-0) has been canceled due to COVID-19, but the rest of the conference contests are expected to be played.

In the Cornbelt Conference, Class 9A No. 2 Canistota/Freeman (6-1) travels to Class 9AA No. 5 Hanson (6-1) on Friday to face the Beavers in Alexandria. Irene-Wakonda (1-6) takes on Menno/Marion (1-6) in Menno. Baltic (4-2) also faces Chester Area (5-2).

Great Plains Conference contests include: Gayville-Volin (2-3) at Corsica-Stickney (3-4) in Corsica, Burke (4-3) vs. Alcester-Hudson (5-2), Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian hosting Avon in Lake Andes and Colome (1-6) also hosts Scotland (3-3).


The one cross-conference game features Centerville (0-7) at Parker (2-5).

The nine-man regular season concludes on Friday, with the first round of the playoffs beginning on Oct. 22.
