Cooney named USF men's student-athlete of the year

SIOUX FALLS -- University of Sioux Falls golfer J.J. Cooney was named the Cougars’ men’s student-athlete of the year. Kaely Hummel was the women’s recipient.

Each athlete was nominated by their head coach, then selected in a vote by USF athletic department staff.

Cooney, a Pickstown native, ranked fifth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with a 73.54 round score. His best round of the season was 69 strokes during the second round of the Watkins Invitational, which he won in a playoff during a program-record 140 strokes.

He finishes his career with 16 top-10 finishes, including three this season. Cooney was also a three-time all-NSIC selection and a three-time academic all-NSIC honoree. He received the NSIC Myles Brand all-academic with distinction award for a grade-point average of 3.75 or higher, as well.
