Colman-Egan places six players on 9B all-state tea


State champion Colman-Egan led the way with six selections to the Class 9B all-state football team, selected by the South Dakota Football Coaches Association. Seniors Nate Tolley, Eli Bowen, Dalton Voelker, Ty Hiller and Chase Hemmer and sophomore Kelby Voelker were honored. Additionally, junior Ryker Hawkins was an honorable mention.

The Hawks went 12-0 and beat Herreid/Selby Area 58-6 in the final. They outscored their opponents a combined 601-80 (50.08-6.67 average), including 214-42 (53.5-10.5) in the postseason. It marked CE’s second 9B title in three years. It added a 9A crown in 2016 and a 9B championship in 1998.

Third-seeded Dell Rapids St. Mary had four all-state honorees, while the sixth-seeded Wolverines and No. 2 Harding County both had three. Wolsey-Wessington and Faulkton both had two selections, while Langford Area, Kadoka Area, Alcester-Hudson and Estelline/Hendricks rounded out the 24-player list – which featured 17 seniors, five juniors and two sophomores – with one apiece. HSA won three road games to reach the final, including a 48-38 victory over the Cardinals in the quarterfinals and a 54-32 defeat of the Ranchers in the semis. The Warbirds fell 46-36 to the top-seeded Hawks in the other semifinal.


Quarterback: Nate Tolley, Colman-Egan, Sr. (6-2, 171). Picked up 957 yards on 109 rushes – 8.78 average – and found the end zone 24 times. Was 31-of-49 for 560 yards with 12 touchdowns and just a pair of interceptions through the air.


Fullback/Halfback: Hayden Reints, Langford Area, Jr. (5-7, 205). Ran for 248 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 57 attempts and had eight receptions for 70 yards and a score. Was the lead blocker for a team that rushed for 2,492 yards.

Running back: Clayton Randall II, Herreid/Selby Area, Sr. (6-0, 182). Ran 208 times for 1,729 yards – 8.31 per carry – while scoring 25 touchdowns and adding 17 two-point conversions. Recorded five receptions for 228 yards with three touchdowns.

Running back: Eli Bowen, Colman-Egan, Sr. (5-9, 175). Ran 108 times for 1,213 yards – 11.23 average – with 19 touchdowns and added a trio of catches for 57 yards and three scores. Recorded 62 tackles and four takeaways defensively.

Wide receiver: Zack Anders, Harding County, Sr. (5-11, 155). Anders is on the Class 9B all-state squad for the second season in a row. In 2019, he totaled 898 yards on 50 receptions – 18 yards per catch – while scoring 13 times. Added 245 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Wide receiver: Tristan Abbott, Wolsey-Wessington, Jr. (6-3, 200). Finished with 1,110 yards on 48 receptions – 22.2 average – and scored 12 touchdowns, six of which were more than 50 yards long. Added a return touchdown.

Tight end: Dalton Voelker, Colman-Egan, Sr. (6-6, 230). Hauled in six receptions for 170 yards and a pair of touchdowns and also helped block for the Hawks’ potent rushing attack. Added 65 tackles, including five sacks, as a defensive end.

Line: Todd Oberle Jr., Herreid/Selby Area, Sr. (6-1, 203). One of the leaders of a line that put up nearly 5,000 yards of offense. Recorded 77 tackles, two sacks and an INT on defense.

Line: Jarred Hicks, Kadoka Area, Sr. (5-11, 220). Recorded 103 tackles, including 12 for loss (nine sacks) as a defensive tackle and was also a part of the offensive line. Recovered five fumbles – returning one for a score – while forcing four fumbles and also blocking a punt.


Line: Tanner Horn, Wolsey-Wessington, Sr. (6-0, 190). Helped the Warbirds totaled 3,328 rushing yards (48 touchdowns) and 1,940 passing yards (19 touchdowns). Was second on the team with 41 pancake blocks.

Line: Kelby Voelker, Colman-Egan, So. (6-2, 225). Was the center for an offense that put up 274 yards per game.


Line: Ty Hiller, Colman-Egan, Sr. (6-2, 190). Recorded 48 tackles, including four sacks, and added a pick-six. The opposition averaged just 3 yards per rushing attempt. Also played guard for an offense that picked up 2,990 yards on 312 carries.

Line: Gage Carter, Faulkton Area, Sr. (6-3, 190). Totaled 46 tackles, including five for loss (one sack). Forced three fumbles and deflected a trio of passes. As a tight end, scored four touchdowns.

Line: Chance Gregg, Herreid/Selby Area, So. (6-1, 220). Logged 77 tackles with eight sacks at D-End. Leader of an offensive line that totaled nearly 5,000 yards.

Line: Jaxon Doering, Alcester-Hudson, Jr. (6-2, 190). Had 56 tackles, including 11 1/2 for loss (five sacks) while recovering three fumbles and recording a safety.

Linebacker: Sam Adams, Harding County, Sr. (5-11, 215). Recorded 110 tackles and had seven takeaways – four INTs, three fumbles – while scoring a pair of defensive touchdowns. Also forced five fumbles and tallied four sacks. Finished career with 237 stops and 14 takeaways.


Linebacker: Eli Longville, Dell Rapids St. Mary, Sr. (5-9, 180). Racked up 96 1/2 tackles, including one sack. Picked off three passes and returned a fumble for a touchdown.

Linebacker: Chase Hemmer, Colman-Egan, Sr. (5-9, 160). Helped lead the stingy defense, recording 70 tackles, including a pair of sacks. Intercepted a pass. The Hawks allowed just 3 yards per rushing attempt.

Linebacker: Marcis Hausman, Estelline/Hendricks, Sr. (5-8, 170). Hausman did it all for the Redhawks. Defensively, he racked up 126 tackles. He recovered three fumbles, intercepted a pair of passes, forced two fumbles, tallied three sacks and blocked a kick. He finished with 312 career tackles.

Back: Camden Hett, Harding County, Sr. (6-2, 185). Got it done on both sides of the ball for the Ranchers. On defense, picked up six passes, returning four of them to paydirt. Recorded 36 tackles. Finished career with 15 INTs and six defensive scores.

Back: Weston Geraets, Dell Rapids St. Mary, Sr. (6-3, 170). Was second on the team with 77 stops. Picked off seven passes – returning one for a touchdown– and forced a pair of fumbles.

Special teams

Kicker: Noah Dennis, Dell Rapids St. Mary, Jr. (6-1, 215). Averaged 42.6 yards on 60 kickoffs.

Player: Derek Heitmann, Faulkton Area, Sr. (6-1, 180). Averaged 16.7 yards on three punt returns. Averaged 35 yards on four punts and 51 yards on two kickoffs. Recorded 21 tackles, 11 pass breakups, an INT, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble.

Player: Connor Libis, Dell Rapids St. Mary, Jr. (5-9, 150). Averaged 27.8 yards on six kick returns and 16.3 yards on seven punt returns. Has had a hand in 34 touchdowns (17 rushing/17 passing) and picked off 13 passes in his career.
