BROOKINGS — The Mitchell Tech rodeo squad kicked off its spring season at the Jackrabbit Stampede over the weekend.

Garrett Varilek, a native of Rapid City who was the Mavericks’ fall 2022 men’s points champion, took first place in the saddle bronc riding.

A pair of Burke natives in Tucker Even and Lainee Schonebaum also placed at the rodeo, with Even taking fifth in steer wrestling and Schonebaum finishing seventh in breakaway roping. As a team, the Mitchell Tech men’s team came in seventh of nine squads, while the women’s team finished eighth out of eight teams.

The Mavericks are back in action on April 21 and 22 in Ames, Iowa, at the 59th Annual Cyclone Stampede.
