Jada Campbell scores 30 points as Tiger defense clamps down on Mount Marty for road win

YANKTON — A 30-point night from Jada Campbell and a strong defensive effort from the Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball powered Mount Marty to its fifth win of the season on Tuesday with a 59-39 triumph over the Lancers at Cimpl Arena. It is the Tigers’ 14th consecutive win over the Lancers in the rivalry series.

In a game in which the Tigers’ never trailed, Mount Marty was kept to 12-for-51 shooting (23.5%) and DWU forced 15 turnovers from the Lancers’ offense, which DWU used to score 16 points.

On the Tigers’ end of the court, Campbell was 14-for-18 from the field and finished with nine rebounds and three blocks. Isabel Ihnen had 11 points and Morgan Edelman had five points, seven assists and 10 rebounds, while playing 35 minutes. The efforts helped lift the Tigers despite an off-night from Matti Reiner, who was 0-for-9 from the field and finished with two points.

DWU (5-1, 3-1 GPAC) shot 36.5% from the field in the game and had assists on 18 of its 23 made field goals. The Tigers were 5-for-18 on 3-pointers and 8-for-17 on free throws, as DWU scored a season-low for points as a team.

The Tigers allowed only 14 points through 20, holding a 24-12 lead at the intermission, and allowed 23 points through the first three quarters. It is the second time already in the young season that DWU’s defense has held an opponent to fewer than 40 points (joining the 91-31 win over Presentation on Nov. 6).

Mount Marty (2-7, 0-4 GPAC) was led by Eve Millar’s 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Mitchell graduate Macy Kempf had five points and four rebounds as a starting forward.

DWU will play an exhibition game against NCAA Division II Augustana University at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls.
