All four top teams at the Class AA state volleyball tournament proved their seeds in the opening round Thursday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

No. 1 Sioux Falls O’Gorman came out striking as it defeated No. 8 Rapid City Central in the opening match of the tournament, winning 25-15, 25-23, 25-14.

The Knights (19-0) were led by Taryn Kloth and Lauren Witte. Both players recorded 18 kills and Kloth, who led the O’Gorman offensively in the regular season, added 13 digs for a double-double.

Delanie Stene tallied a match-high 18 digs, while Dalee Stene led all players with 40 kills and three aces.

The Cobblers (10-15) were led by Emily Herrera with 11 kills and six digs. Abigail Wahl had a team-best 12 digs and 20 assists for a double-double.

The Knights face No. 5 Aberdeen Central for a spot in the championship match at 6 p.m. today at the Corn Palace. The Cobblers face No. 4 Sioux Falls Washington in the consolation bracket at noon today.

Aberdeen Central 3, Sioux Falls Washington 0
Maddie Goetz recorded a double-double with 26 assists and 13 digs to lead No. 5 Aberdeen Central to a straight set win over No. 4 Sioux Falls Washington Thursday in the first round of the Class AA state volleyball tournament at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

Set scores were 25-23, 25-23, 27-25.

Aberdeen Central’s Brianna Kusler also had a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, while Bridget White had a match-high 13 kills and added five digs and three blocks. Meggie Hanson tallied 21 digs for the Golden Eagles (17-4).

Washington (18-7) was led by Jamie Kayl with 10 kills and 12 digs for a double-double. Peyton VandeBrake had a team-high 11 kills and added three aces, two digs and two blocks. Hannah Nieman tallied a match-high 32 assists, two kills, nine digs and one block, while Ellie Benson led all players with 23 digs.

The Golden Eagles play top-seeded Sioux Falls O’Gorman in the semifinal round at 6 p.m. today at the Corn Palace. The Warriors take on No. 8 Rapid City Central in the consolation bracket at noon today.

Huron 3, Rapid City Stevens 0
Huron’s Asia King dominated at the net with a match-high 16 kills to lead the No. 3 Tigers over No. 6 Rapid City Stevens 25-22, 25-20, 25-22 Thursday during the first round of the Class AA state volleyball tournament at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

King added four digs, one ace and one block in the win. Halee Allerdings followed with nine kills, eight digs and one ace, Kelly McCarty posted a match-high 32 assists, three aces, six kills and six digs and Lizzy Katz added a team-best 15 digs and two aces. Bailey Rathjen tallied 13 digs for the Tigers (18-4).

The Raiders (18-12) were led by Sydney Daane with 23 assists and seven digs. Cassidy Steele recorded nine kills and two blocks, while Skylar Larson posted 12 digs and Madison Larsen had 11.

Huron advances to play No. 2 Sioux Falls Roosevelt in the semifinals at 7:45 p.m. today, while the Raiders face No. 7 Watertown in the consolation bracket at 1:45 p.m. today at the Corn Palace.

Sioux Falls Roosevelt 3, Watertown 0
Maggie DeJong led the No. 2 Sioux Falls Roosevelt Rough Riders to a 3-0 win over No. 7 Watertown Thursday in the first round of the Class AA state volleyball tournament at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

Set scores were 25-23, 25-15, 25-16.

DeJong, who will play at Division I program Louisville next year, recorded a match-high 15 kills and added 10 digs and three blocks. Erinn Temple had 34 assists, six digs, two blocks and one kills, while Tagyn Larson tallied 11 kills, two aces, nine digs and four blocks for the Rough Riders (24-8). Jennifer Lindgren added 10 digs in the win.

Watertown’s Macy Denzer posted a team-high 10 kills and 14 digs for a double-double, while Chelsey Borkuis added 22 assists, four kills and six digs for the Arrows (11-10). Megan Pfeifer also had 12 digs in the loss.

The Rough Riders face No. 3 Huron for a spot in Saturday’s championship match at 7:45 p.m. today. The Arrows play No. 6 Rapid City Stevens in the consolation bracket at 1:45 p.m. today at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
