Class A SoDak 16 previews: Three area teams shooting for state berth

The Class A SoDak 16 girls basketball games are Monday, with the eight winners qualifying for the State A girls basketball tournament on March 14-16 in Sioux Falls.

The Class A SoDak 16 girls basketball games are Monday, with the eight winners qualifying for the State A girls basketball tournament on March 14-16 in Sioux Falls.

Below is a short look at each of the area Class A matchups:

Winner sports unblemished record

The undefeated Winner girls basketball team is one step away from the state tournament.

The No. 2 seeded Warriors (20-0) will face No. 15 Redfield/Doland (15-6) at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Corn Palace. Winner is searching for its first state tournament berth since 2016.

The Warriors feature three players that score in double figures. Freshman Bella Swedlund tosses in 16.7 points per game and has scored in double figures in 18 games this season. She also collects 5.5 rebounds and 3.1 steals per game. Senior Gabriel Kocer adds 12.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per contest, while junior Morgan Hammerbeck scores 11.2.

Redfield/Doland is looking for its first state tournament appearance since becoming a co-op, though Redfield made it in 1998.

Balanced scoring guides MCM

The No. 9 seed McCook Central/Montrose (17-4) takes on eighth-seeded Beresford (20-2) at 8 p.m. Monday in Brandon Valley, with the Fighting Cougars eyeing a second-straight state tournament. Beresford last made the state tournament in 2011.

MCM is led by a trio of double-digit scorers as sophomore Madisen Koepsell (13.2 ppg/8.6 rpg), and juniors Abigail Van Ruler (11.3 ppg/8.9 rpg) and Jacy Pulse (11 ppg) have all topped 230 points this season. Seniors Morgan Erikson and McKenna Kranz add 8.4 and 7.4 points per game, respectively.

As a team, MCM scores 58 points per game and allows 44.6 per contest. Kranz has recorded a team-high 62 steals, while Van Ruler has blocked 57 shots.

MVP rides hot streak into SoDak 16

Mount Vernon/Plankinton is closing in on its third state tournament appearance as a co-op and first since 2015. Hamlin last made the state tournament in 2017.

Although, to do so, the 13th-seeded Titans (16-6) need to pull an upset of No. 4 seed Hamlin (16-4) at 7 p.m. Monday in Madison. This season, MVP has wins over SoDak 16 qualifiers MCM and Redfield/Doland, and enters on a seven-game winning streak.

Junior Katlyn Briggs has paced the Titans with 13.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. They've also gotten production out of seventh-grader Emilee Fox, who averages nine points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals per contest. Senior Hailey Walz adds 7.4 points per game, too.
