Catching up with former area athletes: Waddell captures three first-place finishes in Big Ten opener

Mitchell grad and University of Minnesota swimmer Tevyn Waddell recently reached Olympic Trials cuts.

Mitchell High School graduate Tevyn Waddell claimed three first-place finishes for the Minnesota swimming and diving team on Oct. 26. The Gophers defeated Iowa by a 157-143 margin in their Big Ten Conference opener.

Waddell won the 100-yard backstroke (54.68), 500-yard freestyle (4:56.31) and 200-yard individual medley (2:01.93). She was also on the winning 200 medley relay team that won in a time of 1:41.05.

"It was an exciting meet," Waddell said in a press release. "A lot of us weren't doing the events we usually do, so it was fun to see people do different events. It was nice to see that even in our off events, we still came out on top."

The Gophers will host Big Ten foe Wisconsin at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on Nov. 8.
