Catching up with former area athletes: Schmidt seeing time for Saint Mary’s volleyball team
Mitchell High School graduate Mandy Schmidt has played in three matches for Saint Mary’s University this season.
The freshman setter is coming off a career-high 12 digs as the Cardinals defeated Augustana College (Illinois) 3-1 on Sept. 28. She also recorded a career-high 35 assists in Saint Mary’s 3-1 win over Beloit College (Wisconsin) on Sept. 14.
She’s registered two kills and three aces on the season.
The Cardinals, an NCAA Division III program in Minnesota, is 11-7 entering Wednesday’s match against No. 19 University of St. Thomas. Saint Mary’s plays at Bethel University on Saturday.
Waddell named Gopher team captain
The University of Minnesota swimming and diving team recently announced its team captains for the 2019-20 season.
Gopher senior and Mitchell High School graduate will serve as one of the women’s team captains. Waddell returns for her senior season after being named an All-American in the 400 medley relay in 2018-19, as well as honorable mention All-American in the 800 free relay and 200 medley relay. Waddell was an All-American in the 400 medley relay and 200 medley relay as a sophomore, achieving top-six finishes in the NCAA in both events.
Also in 2017-18, she placed 16th at the NCAA Championships in the 100 back and was awarded All-American honorable mention honors. As a freshman, Waddell was named Big Ten freshman of the year and to the All-Big Ten team, while receiving a trio of honorable mention All-American honors in the 800 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay.
The Gophers officially begin their 2019-20 season when the Florida Gators visit Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on Oct. 11.
Lee, Cooney pace teams at Augie invite
Two area golfers -- Picktown’s J.J. Cooney and Parkston’s Jacob Lee -- guided their golf teams to top-two finishes at the Augustana University Invitational on Sept. 28-29.
Cooney, a senior at University of Sioux Falls, captured ninth place for the Cougars. USF won the team title with a 591. He finished at five-over par with a two-round total of 149 (75-74). In eight rounds this season, Cooney has kept his score at 75 or lower.
Lee, a sophomore at Augie, was one of three Viking golfers that shot a 148 and tied for third place. The Vikings finished second with a 597.
Augie and USF will both play at Missouri Western Invitational on Oct. 7-8 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
