Catching up with former area athletes: Schmidt, Augustana headed to D-II championship game

Augustana continued to roll on Thursday when it defeated Southern New Hampshire, 8-2, to advance to the NCAA Division II College World Series championship game.

The eighth-seeded Vikings, who are 51-9, will play the winner of Florida Southern and Columbus State in Cary, North Carolina, on Saturday. Augustana beat Florida Southern, 6-5, earlier in the College World Series.

Freshman pitcher Jed Schmidt, of Mitchell, last appeared in Augustana's first game of the NCAA Tournament in the Central Regional. He allowed two runs (none earned) over two innings against Pittsburgh State.

On the season, Schmidt has a 3.03 ERA to go along with 29 strikeouts and 12 walks in 38 2/3 innings. He also has a 3-1 record and one save.

Lemon earns All-American honors

Northwestern College senior runner Aaron Lemon earned All-American honors at the 2018 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.

This is the first outdoor All-American honor in Lemon's career. However, he was an indoor All-American last year in the 600 meters.

The former Mitchell Christian sprinter was part of the eighth-place 4x800 team. Lemon, Peter Hollinger, Hans Epp and Tim Rose finished in 7:53.06 to earn a point for Northwestern in the team standings.

Indiana Wesleyan won the men's 4x800. Northwestern tied for 25th in the team standings with 13 points.

Sutera named NAIA scholar-athlete

Dakota State junior outfielder Zach Sutera was named an NAIA Scholar-Athlete.

The junior Elementary/Special Education major needed to maintain a 3.5 grade-point average to be nominated.

Sutera, a Tyndall native, played in 32 games this season, including 25 starts. He hit .203 with a home run and six RBIs, while also stealing four bases. The Trojans went 5-32 overall and 4-19 in conference play.
