Catching up with former area athletes: Jed Schmidt, Becca Koupal crucial for Augustana postseason runs

Former Mitchell standout Jed Schmidt has been hard to hit as No. 18 Augustana University heads into the NCAA Division II Central Regional.

Former Mitchell standout Jed Schmidt has been hard to hit as No. 18 Augustana University heads into the NCAA Division II Central Regional.

Schmidt has allowed one run in his last five appearances as a reliever for the Vikings. He has also allowed seven hits in 4 2/3 innings during that span.

The junior left-hander has surrendered 13 earned runs in 28 1/3 innings this season with a 4.45 earned run average and 37 strikeouts.

Augustana faces Southern Arkansas at 7 p.m. Thursday in Warrensburg, Missouri.

Koupal plays key role for top-ranked Augie softball

Mitchell alumna Becca Koupal played a major role in Augustana returning to the NCAA Division II Softball Championship.

Koupal scored the game-winning run for the top-ranked Vikings in a 2-1 win over No. 17 Minnesota State in the NCAA Central Regional Friday. The defending national champions also had a 3-2 come-from-behind win over No. 19 Southern Arkansas on May 20 and defeated Minnesota State 7-0 to advance Saturday.

Koupal has 12 at-bats and three hits this season, but is primarily used as a pinch runner. She has scored nine runs this season for the defending national champions.

Augustana begins play in the double-elimination tournament against Valdosta State at noon Thursday in Denver, Colorado.
