Catching up with former area athletes: Cooney takes 12th after strong third round

The University of Sioux Falls junior moved up five spots in the third round to place 12th for the tournament, while the Cougars took ninth. Cooney shot an even-par 71 in his last 18 holes, giving him a three-round total of 220 for the tournament.

USF returns to the course Saturday for the Upper Iowa Invite at Sunnyside Country Club in Fayette, Iowa.

Choal takes eighth in 400 hurdles for USD Lyman graduate Phoenix Choal placed eighth in the 400-meter hurdles for the University of South Dakota in the Wayne State Wildcat Classic on Sunday in Wayne, Nebraska. She finished with a time of 1:10.37 as the Coyotes placed six runners in the top eight spots.

Choal, a junior from Reliance, also placed 14th in the 200, finishing with a time of 28.40 seconds in her first outdoor action of the springs.

The USD track and field team travels to Texas to compete in the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin and the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos, both beginning today and running through Saturday.

Michels earning time behind the plate for USF After redshirting his first season at the University of Sioux Falls, former Mitchell High School standout Sam Michels is finding a niche on the baseball diamond.

Michels has started nine games at catcher for the Cougars this season, hitting .233 in 30 at-bats, with three doubles.

Behind the plate, Michels has not made an error in 63 chances, tossing out two runners attempting to steal.

USF travels to Minot State for a three-game set beginning on Saturday.
