Catching up with former area athletes: Area freshmen chipping in for Lancers early in season

Deric Denning, a Mount Vernon native, had three rebounds, Parkston native Jalen Hurley recorded eight points and six rebounds and Ethan native Blake Bartscher added two points and three assists.

The Lancers (1-9) look to earn their first conference win on Saturday when they host Doane College at 4 p.m.

Cavanaugh helping Trojans

During a four-game week for the Dakota State University men's basketball team, former Mitchell Kernel Seth Cavanaugh chipped in offensively for the Trojans.

DSU (3-6) went 2-2 during Thanksgiving week, earning wins over the University of Sioux Falls and Benedictine College. Cavanaugh, a sophomore, scored 25 points in the four games and grabbed seven rebounds. His best showing was a nine-point performance against the Cougars.

DSU hosts No. 8 Bellevue University at 7 p.m. Saturday in Madison.

Young placing for SDSU swim team

Mitchell native Trina Young helped the South Dakota State University women's swimming and diving team beat the University of Nebraska-Omaha in a dual on Nov. 15.

SDSU won 159.5-140.5. Young, a senior, took fourth in the women's 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2 minutes, 16.27 seconds and fifth in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.4.

She competed in two relay events, including the 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay.

SDSU is set to compete in the Jean Freeman Invite on Friday and Saturday in Minneapolis.
